Seeds of Fire Advisory Committee
We are looking for Southern and Appalachian youth, young adult and adult ally leaders to join the Seeds of Fire Advisory Committee, an intergenerational advisory committee to Highlander’s Seeds of Fire program. The Advisory Committee aims to increase the input and direction of youth and young adults in the Seeds of Fire programs and the overall intergenerational work of the Highlander Center. The Advisory Committee also serves as staff for at least one Seeds of Fire programmatic event, determines grantees for the Seeds of Fire Fund (as money permits), and develops leadership and organizational development skills for members. Your experience, your goals, your dreams, and your hopes: You are Seeds of Fire. Seeds of Fire invites youth-centered, young adult and intergenerational groups in the South and Appalachia to get involved, get funding, and join others to move forward organizing for social change, build capacity among young leaders and adult allies, and make connections between our issues, while forming lasting relationships and networks to create the region and world we wish to see: a world liberated of all forms of oppression. That understanding guides our work.

Youth on the Move: July 16-19, 2014

Come join us for Youth on the Move, a four day workshop/camp from July 16-19th, to share strategies while developing techniques and skills for youth organizing, leadership development and governance for social change. If you would like to spend time with youth, young adults and adult allies who would like to learn more about Highlander, developing young leaders, how adult allies can create spaces for transformative growth with youth and young adults, strengthening connections between organizing and leadership development, and to share ideas and information about working to change the world, then this gathering is for you! This is also our opportunity to explore what’s so special about youth organizing and leadership development and how we can increase our potential. We will also have spaces for youth, young adults and adult allies to meet and grow separately.

We will have workshop sessions, a media/cultural track throughout, cultural sharing, talent shows, and free time to relax, reflect and have fun! This gathering will be run by our Seeds of Fire Advisory Committee. By popular demand this workshop is open to individuals and groups outside the Southern and Appalachian Region, although a majority of participants will come from the region. The cost of this 4 day workshop is $250-$350 per person, which includes room and board. We have resources for Southern and Appalachian groups to attend and some scholarship money available for groups and individuals with limited means who are actively engaged in social change (please send scholarship application with your registration). Childcare and English/Spanish interpretation can be provided. Folks need to apply by June 1st!!

Seeds of Fire Fund

The Seeds of Fire Fund is created by Highlander and supported by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to support youth and young adult organizing groups and efforts in the South and Appalachia. The fund provides grants to groups that have been engaged with Highlander’s Seeds of Fire program and other intergenerational programs over the past three years to support infrastructure projects under $2,000.

STAY Gatherings

The STAY People of Color Gathering will bring together youth and young adults of color from throughout the Central Appalachian region for a two day workshop June 13-15 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to discuss what it means to be a person of color living in the mountains, small towns and cities of Appalachia. We will also vision ways we can better solidify the unique support we want and need as a community and how we can support each other. The STAY Project is holding the 4^th annual LGBTQ Youth ‘Fabu-lachian’ Gathering this May, “a weekend of community, learning and growth for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer youth and allies in Appalachia.” This identity caucus, which is the first of its kind for youth in the region, will bring together folks from across Appalachia for formative discussions about community and identity-organizing, and what those concepts mean to queer youth in Appalachia.
