Highlander Research & Education Center is seeking skilled, reliable contract on-call interpreters to support our multilingual and multicultural community across programs, trainings, and events. Interpreters will provide language access on an as-needed basis for remote and occasional in-person engagements.This is not a full-time or regularly scheduled position; hours will vary based on upcoming events and organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, culturally responsive interpretation (consecutive and/or simultaneous as appropriate).
  • Translate written communications, materials, and publications as needed.
  • Support clear communication between staff, participants, and partners.
  • Uphold confidentiality and community-centered values.
  • Be available for flexible, on-call assignments with varying notice.

 

Requirements

  • Demonstrated fluency in English and at least one of the following: American Sign Language (ASL) • Spanish • Arabic • Farsi • Haitian Creole • Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Prior interpreting or translation experience preferred (community, legal, medical, educational, or movement spaces welcome).
  • Alignment with principles of language justice and inclusive communication.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and professionalism.
  • Ability to work virtually; occasional travel may be requested.

Compensation

  • Competitive contract rate; hours are as-needed and not guaranteed.

Contract On-Call Child Care Workers

Seeking Contract, On-Call Child Care Workers
Knoxville, TN Area

Highlander Research & Education Center is building a small pool of experienced child care workers for contract, on-call/as-needed assignments to support our programs, gatherings, and community events. This is not a full-time or regularly scheduled position; hours will vary based on upcoming events and organizational needs.

About the Role
Child care workers will support children of varying ages during meetings, workshops, and retreats—creating safe, engaging, and nurturing spaces so parents and caregivers can fully participate in Highlander activities. Workers will also collaborate closely with Highlander program staff to integrate age-appropriate social justice curriculum and play-based learning that reflects our mission.

Responsibilities

  • Provide attentive, developmentally appropriate care to children in group settings.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment aligned with Highlander’s mission and values.
  • Work with program staff to deliver age-appropriate social justice activities, stories, games, and creative learning experiences.
  • Support play, learning, and rest appropriate to each age group.
  • Communicate clearly with staff and caregivers about needs or concerns.
  • Work on a contract, on-call/as-needed basis, with schedules determined by event timing.

 

Requirements

  • Prior experience in child care, early childhood settings, youth programs, or related fields.
  • Commitment to safety, inclusivity, and community care.
  • Ability to support simple, age-appropriate social justice concepts through storytelling, art, play, and guided activities.
  • Must successfully complete a background check.
  • Must provide two or more professional references.
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed (varies by event).
  • Reliable transportation to Knoxville-area locations.
