Highlander Center & Bernice Johnson Reagon
Reagon began her journey as a committed activist, cultural voice and radical Black woman in her home town of Albany, Georgia, during the early sixties. She was introduced to Highlander by the SNCC field secretaries who came to Southwest Georgia to organize. They in turn introduced the Albany students to Guy Carawan, then working for Highlander and traveling to communities involved in local campaigns against racial segregation. Reagon’s relationship with Highlander stretches more than 4 decades. Her presentation will be an offering to that journey and its impact on her life, and as a locus for change and transformation from its base in the mountains of Tennessee.
