Highlander Looking for Six Month Seeds of Fire Intern!
Focus of Internship:
The Highlander Seeds of Fire program works every summer with young people from organizations in the South and Appalachia to build leadership and organizing skills. This summer we are planning a July tour of historical and current activism sites in the South, with workshops along the way. Additional efforts that are on-going during this period that intern will be part of could include: Seeds of Fire mini-camps in local communities, completing a Seeds of Fire evaluation, help with Children’s Justice Camp, help with a strategy session on police/state violence. Additional events during this time include Highlander’s Wild and Wacky Workshop Work Week, and our September Homecoming. The intern will work as part of the Seeds of Fire team.
We work to have internships to be both great educational experiences for the person, but also incorporating them deeply into our program work. Activities for the intern may include:
Seeds of Fire Tour, minicamps and strategy session – Help with outreach, selection, logistics, documentation, planning and facilitation, database management, material development, documentation as well as help to support the Seeds of Fire Advisory Committee
Seeds of Fire evaluation- on-line research and contacts with past participants
Other Highlander events – support other Highlander activities as possible –
Useful interests and skills for this position include:
–Interest/experience being part of or working with young people, interest in organizing and popular education, experience being part of a group working for social change
–Experience organizing around police/state violence, juvenile justice, and school-to-prison pipeline
–Interest in learning more about Highlander, previous experience at Highlander helpful
–Bilingual English-Spanish written and oral ability
Timing for internship:
To start in April or May, through September or October, based at Highlander Center in New Market TN 37820
Stipend: We provide a $200 per week stipend as well as housing and some meals.
Important to know: Internship is based at Highlander Center, which is located out in a rural area about 16 miles east of Knoxville, Tennessee. A car is helpful; there is no public transportation available.
