The Highlander Research and Education Center’s Septima Clark Learning Center invites activists and organizers to apply to its inaugural Southern Memory Workers’ Institute.
The institute, which takes place from June 28 to July 2, 2023, brings together up to 20 grassroots activists and organizers in the South for a 4-day training in archival and memory-work methods in-person at the Highlander Center in New Market, Tennessee.
Travel, accommodations, food, and supplies will be provided and arranged by Highlander.
Participants will have an opportunity to learn from other activists and organizers in the South. At Highlander, everyone is a learner and everyone is a teacher. The purpose of the institute is to expand individuals’ practices and knowledges in:
- public history through building a community narrative and understanding their roles in movement history
- preservation and archival best practices including storing, digitizing, and describing materials
- documentarian techniques such as oral history and photography
- developing political strategies from historical research
Eligibility:
- Grassroots activists and organizers with interest or experience in documentary arts, historical/archival research, oral history, and community-based archives
- Must be from the Southern region (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia).
- Priority will be given to Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, women, LGBTQ+ and gender variant/non-conforming folks, and working-class/cash poor people.
Timeline:
- Application Open: Sunday, February 19th

ABOUT HIGHLANDER RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER
Highlander is located on the indigenous land of the eastern Cherokee — the Tsalaguwetiy.
Founded in 1932, Highlander has centered the experiences of directly-impacted people in our region, knowing that together, we have the solutions to address the challenges we face in our communities and to build more just, equitable, and sustainable systems and structures. Our workshops and programming bring people together across issues, identity, and geography to share and build skills, knowledge, and strategies for transformative social change. The workshop center is located on top of Bay’s Mountain, about 20 miles east of Knoxville Tennessee with 180 acres of land.
ABOUT THE SEPTIMA CLARK LEARNING CENTER
The Septima Clark Learning Center houses Highlander’s library, archive and radical bookstore in a beautiful new building. The Highlander library & archive is an irreplaceable resource that serves to document and honor the history and legacy of the thousands of community leaders who come through Highlander. The Learning Center also includes a multi-use room for films, displays, workshops, healing space, and art-making; and it has an incredible deck and porch to enjoy the Smoky Mountain views!

El Centro de Aprendizaje Septima Clark del Highlander Research and Education Center (Centro de Investigaciones y Educación Highlander) invita a activistas y organizadorxs a presentar su solicitud para participar en la edición inaugural del Instituto de Trabajadorxs de la Memoria del Sur.
El instituto, que tendrá lugar entre el 28 de junio y el 2 de julio de 2023, reunirá a un máximo de veinte activistas y organizadorxs de base del Sur para ofrecerles una capacitación presencial de cuatro días en metodologías de trabajo con archivos y memoria en el Highlander Center de New Market, Tennessee.
Highlander proporcionará y gestionará el traslado, el alojamiento, la alimentación y los materiales.
Lxs participantes gozarán de la oportunidad de aprender de otrxs activistas y organizadorxs del Sur. En Highlander, todxs aprendemos y todxs enseñamos. El instituto tiene como propósito ampliar las prácticas y los conocimientos de lxs individuxs en relación con:
- la historia pública construida a través de una narrativa comunitaria y la comprensión del papel de cada unx en la historia de los movimientos sociales
- las mejores prácticas de conservación y archivo, incluyendo el almacenamiento, la digitalización y la descripción de materiales
- técnicas para documentalistas, tales como la historia oral y la fotografía
- el desarrollo de estrategias políticas a partir de la investigación histórica
Personas elegibles:
- Activistas y organizadorxs de base con interés o experiencia en artes documentales, investigación histórica/archivística, historia oral y archivos comunitarios.
- Deben ser de la región del Sur (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Luisiana, Misisipi, Carolina del Norte, Carolina del Sur, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia y Virginia Occidental).
- Tendrán prioridad las personas de raza negra, morena e indígena, las mujeres, las personas LGBTQ+ y de género variante/no conforme y las personas de clase trabajadora/pobres monetariamente.
Cronograma:
- Apertura de solicitudes: Domingo 19 de febrero
- Sesión informativa: 6 de marzo, 7-8 p. m. EST
- Cierre de solicitudes: 19 de marzo a medianoche (donde sea que estés en el Sur)
- Notificación de la decisión a lxs candidatxs: 14 de abril

ACERCA DEL CENTRO DE APRENDIZAJE SEPTIMA CLARK
El nuevo y muy hermoso edificio del Centro de Aprendizaje Septima Clark alberga la biblioteca, el archivo y la librería radical de Highlander. La biblioteca-archivo de Highlander es un recurso imprescindible destinado para documentar y honrar la historia y el legado de lxs miles de líderes comunitarixs que han pasado por Highlander. El Centro de Aprendizaje también cuenta con una sala multiusos para proyección de películas, exposiciones, talleres, espacios de sanación y creación artística, así como con una estupenda terraza con porche para disfrutar del paisaje de las Smoky Mountains.
