Highlander Announcements
1. Highlander Homecoming & Apple Festival 2008 - 8/31/08
Join us on Labor Day Weekend, Sunday, August 31st, from 1:00-9:00 p.m. for the Highlander Homecoming and, a first this year, Apple Festival!
Highlander is expanding with an 80 acre farm next door that has a beautiful apple orchard. We will be having hayrides and apple picking trips to this farm as part of Homecoming this year, so come and help us plan for the future.
We will celebrate the lives of Lewis Sinclair, Nayo Watkins, James Orange, and other supporters of justice, to remind us of the shoulders that we all rest upon.
There will also be great music, children's activities, workshops on What's up at Highlander and Making Change beyond the Election, and a barbecue dinner (including apple desserts!). We are also pleased to share the "One Day of the War - How Would You Spend It?" exhibit from the American Friends Service Committee.

2. 75th Anniversary Events in Los Angeles & Northern California
Join Highlander friends, supporters, and staff members in Los Angeles and San Francisco as we celebrate Highlander’s 75 years on the cutting edge of social justice organizing and draw lessons from this experience to nurture and inspire current and future organizing efforts.
3. Highlander Farm Internship
Highlander has an opening for a farm intern, to work on our 180-acre farm in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee.
The intern’s primary responsibilities will include helping with the following:
- Picking fruit in our 500-tree apple and peach orchard.
- Transporting apples and peaches to local farmers markets and staffing the Highlander table at these markets.
- Care of orchard after growing season, including pruning.
- Assisting in general maintenance of the Highlander farm.
Other activities will include greeting guests, helping to lead tours of Highlander’s farm, and participating in a Board/staff committee that is developing a long-term vision and plan for Highlander’s land and facilities.
