Highlander Apples for Sale
at the Market Square Farmers Market!
Apples from Highlander's newly purchased Hungry Mountain Farm will be available at the Market Square Farmers Market in downtown Knoxville this Saturday, August 16th, during the Market's regular hours from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The apples for sale this weekend are Gala apples, with red skins and a crisp, sweet taste. They are excellent for eating raw and for cooking.
We will be selling Galas and other varieties of apples from Hungry Mountain Farm throughout the fall at the Market Square Farmers Market and at other farmers markets in the area. We anticipate that the following varieties will be available:
- Gala - mid-August to mid-September
- Golden Delicious - September-October
- Winesap, Hardy Cumberland, and Red Delicious - late September to mid-October
- Arkansas Black - late September through October.
If you would like to volunteer to help sell apples at one of the local farmers markets, please contact Charlie Biggs at (865) 933-3443 x242 or charlie (at) highlandercenter.org.
Hungry Mountain Farm is also a "pick-your-own" farm, and apples are available now for picking. For information, visit Highlander's website: www.highlandercenter.org.
Hungry Mountain Farm is immediately adjacent to Highlander's current property outside New Market, Tennessee. It includes a 500-tree apple orchard and a smaller peach orchard. Highlander has purchased the property as part of its 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign to protect it from development and to strengthen our work for social, economic, and environmental justice in Appalachia and the South.
Highlander staff will be giving tours of Hungry Mountain Farm during our annual Homeming and Apple Festival on August 31st. For information, visit www.highlandercenter.org.
Purchasing Hungry Mountain Farm is an exciting step for Highlander, and the apples really are delicious. We hope to see you at the Market Square Farmers Market this Saturday.
If you will not be able to attend the Farmers Market and would like to purchase apples directly from Highlander, please contact Rob Reining at 865-933-3443 x 223 or rob (at) highlandercenter.org. The price is $2 for a 1/2-peck bag; $4 for a 1-peck bag, $8 for a 1/2-bushel bag, or $14 for a bushel.
